Caffeine

Words and music by Michael Benning Grebb

Lyrics

You see me, and you take in my breath
You say it’s caffeine or maybe, crystal meth
You say I’m intrigued with the daily grind
Watch as I smile and leave you all behind

Yes, I know there are flowers
And yes, I know that they smell good
But days are turning to hours
And I haven’t done what I should

We’re not here long
Less than a century
You can tell me I’m wrong
Just don’t tell me,
“Too much caffeine”

I can see from the look on your tired face
that you’re not hooked on my addictive grace
Well, maybe you’re right,
Yeah, I’m a mutant throwback
to a time before Sundays and suburban slack

Yes, I know there are candles
and yes, I know both ends don’t burn
But now that we’re waxing prophetic,
I predict you will someday learn

We’re not here long
Less than a century
I want to make my mark…
kind of like a rottweiler on a tree,
(oh, man… did I say that?)
Too much caffeine

Okay, I’ll admit that I thought by this year
that I’d have taken over the world
or at least the Western Hemisphere
No matter how high I climb, you know
there’s always someone above
and now I’m starting to sound
like people I used to make fun of

Yes, I heard you’re going out
with all the friends I used to see
Maybe I’ll tag along this one time
and find out what I’ve been missing

We’re not here long
Less than a century
Maybe a little balance isn’t so wrong
And besides, there’s nothing on TV

…and there’s gotta be something on TV
Too much caffeine
